A voting event titled “Miraculous Bad Face Championship” is being held at Akita Inu no Sato, a visitor center in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, until the end of November.

Sixteen Akita dogs that appear in the center’s exhibition are entered in the contest. Several photographs of “bad faces” were taken by chance during the exhibition, and visitors can vote for their favorite by placing a sticker on a photo of the dog.

There are a variety of “bad faces,” such as wearing sunglasses and opening their mouths wide. Since the contest began in September, the red-haired Botan (one-year-old male) has dominated the others in the number of votes. According to the staff, Botan stands out for his evil look, as if he glares at the viewer from below.

The staff said, “It is interesting to compare their cute faces seen in the exhibition room with the bad ones in the photos. Please enjoy talking about the photos with your friends and family and vote for your favorite face.”

The results will be announced around the beginning of next month on the center’s X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. In the future, they are considering championships for sleeping faces and smiling faces.

The number of Akita dogs raised overseas continues to increase. In Akita Prefecture, the Akita dog's birthplace, there is an active movement to utilize them for tourism promotion. Akita Sakigake Shimpo, entitled "Akitainu News," will circulate various domestic and international information about Akita dogs. The goal is to connect the world and Akita through Akita dogs.
