Mr. Hamada Masami of Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, attended the advance screening of the film Palma on March 23rd, 2021. He raised the Akita dog Masaru given to Miss Zagitova in 2018 and was invited to the screening. Mr. Hamada was intently listening to Miss Zagitova’s greeting, saying, “It was touching to know that Miss Zagitova is comfortable with Masaru, and she gives him great care. It is wonderful that she came all this way from Russia, which Akita dogs made this opportunity possible.”
Mr. Hamada and his wife Emiko visited Odate City to attend the screening with their Akita dog Hanasho, the mother of Masaru. Though his wish of having Hanasho meet Miss Zagitova did not occur due to the strict measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the couple enjoyed her greeting made on the stage. Mr. Hamada held up a sheet of paper that said, “I am Hamada, who raised Masaru.” He said, “I hope Miss Zagitova noticed us. Honestly, I wish I could have met her in person and talked about Masaru.”
Mr. Hamada also commented on “Palma,” saying, “This is truly an emotional film. It expresses dogs’ loyalty and affection for people. I felt that the beautiful bond between humans and animals is common in different countries.”
He concluded with his wish, “If there is any chance, I hope Miss Zagitova will come to Akita again with Masaru after the coronavirus pandemic ends. I would be happy if Akita dogs become a bridge of friendship between Japan and Russia, promoting our nations’ active communication even further.”
